Thorsten Brost, P. Eng.

At a young age, Thorsten was always inquisitive. By the time he was 10 years old, he was helping in his father’s welding shop, and later in his teens working on residential construction jobs – Taking any shop class available in school made engineering a natural fit for him.

Thorsten graduated from the University of Alberta with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, and didn’t waste time getting started on his life-long journey of learning. After some summer terms in the oil and gas business, Thorsten’s began working in a pulp and paper mill in Kenora, Ontario. While schooling is important, he quickly realized that real lessons were taught in the field.

Thorsten continued his career in the pulp and paper sector, moving to different mills in Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta, and Quebec; even working south-of-the-border in Florida and Georgia. Although he moved up in responsibility, culminating as a mill manager for a start-up specialty pulp mill, he always loved being on the plant floor – Working with real people, solving real problems.

After 20 years, he left the pulp and paper sector to found Induspec, which has always proven to be a “boots on the ground” engineering firm that works with real people to provide solutions to real problems.

Dave Smits, P. Eng.

Dave was raised on his family’s dairy farm West of North Bay, ON, and this setting developed the need to understand how things worked as problem solving was a fact of everyday life. He has always had a keen interest in all things mechanical and took as many shop classes as possible throughout his time in highschool.

Dave graduated from Carleton University in Ottawa with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Over his 30-year career, he has had the good fortune of working in a number of different industries in a variety of progressively more senior positions. These positions also provided an excellent opportunity for hands-on, life-long learning, which Dave knows is very important.

For the last 15 years, Dave has been responsible for the maintenance, renovation, construction and operation of several large healthcare-related buildings and is a member of CSA Z-8000 committee for the design of Canadian healthcare facilities. Prior to facilities management, Dave had a career in utilities management, which included natural gas distribution and electricity generation.

As a seasoned professional, he not only understands how buildings are designed and constructed, but knows exactly how they should work once operating. Dave has accumulated extensive experience in project management in a number of sectors, and has a passion for energy management and conservation, as this type of work plays an important role on greenhouse gas reductions.
